Coleman was born in Blackpool Lancashire. She was educated at Arnold School in Blackpool. As headgirl, she earned straight A grades in her A-Levels. Steven Moffat, the producer of Doctor Who confirmed in a 21st March press conference in 2012 that Coleman will portray Matt Smith's character following the departure of Karen Gillan left.
